For the first time, the Center hosted an institute alumni dinner for all the graduates of the annual summer bioethics institutes and gave away two awards to deserving alumni who are making a difference in bioethics.
Recipient Nancy Jones told the dinner crowd that her CBHD training has led to her participation on federal government commissions and professional society projects. She spearheaded a CBHD conference at Wake Forest University and authored a code of ethics for bioscience to help guide the field.
Recipient John Dunlop said his CBHD training has enabled him to treat suffering and dying patients in wonderfully new ways. He has developed and taught an entire educational curriculum on successful aging and dying for the church, and has become a sought-after teacher and speaker.

The Center celebrated its 10th anniversary during the Conflict & Conscience in Healthcare international conference. We had 300 attendees from all across the country as well as participants from Australia, Canada, Ecuador, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. This year the Center hosted six different institutes and seminars around the conference, the highest number ever. Next year’s conference will focus on the biotech arena.
The Center recently received word that the nation’s major secular bioethics publisher, Georgetown University Press, has committed to publishing our forthcoming major work on biotechnology and its shaping influence on medicine and society. The book will be co-authored by C. Christopher Hook, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Edmund Pellegrino, Scott Rae, C. Ben Mitchell, and John F. Kilner. The Center expects this book to be a foundational work on the topic.
The Center welcomes Paul Hagberg and Sarah Flashing to the staff. Paul Hagberg brings substantial business and personnel expertise to a newly-expanded Chief Operations Officer position starting September 1. Sarah Flashing joined the staff in June as the Center’s Resource Manager. She is completing her MA in Christian Thought at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
