This session explores advances in modern biology that are radically reshaping traditional paradigms of medicine through the development of regenerative medicine. Current and future technologies involving artificial organs, stem cell research, and tissue engineering will be explored both for their contribution to basic science and medical research, but also for the ethical, legal, and/or social concerns they raise. Particular attention will be given to the use of human embryos in medical research, the creation of “artificial” or hybrid life forms, and the implications of regenerative medicine for life extension and end of life care.
