
The problems we face in paying for healthcare result in conflict and issues of conscience. Because of a pervasive entitlement mentality in our society, the subject has become a political football. The truth is that the majority of us pay for our own healthcare, either directly or indirectly. If our place of work provides health insurance, we are actually paying for this by receiving less in salary, bonus, and other forms of compensation. If government pays our bills through the Medicare system, we are paying this through taxes.We have lost our understanding of what any kind of insurance is for: to provide funds for large, unusual, and unexpected losses. One way to address the problem is to bring the patient into the decision-making process in the purchase of healthcare. Specifically, the Health Savings Account is a concept whose time has come. This and similar options will be discussed.The need for reform of our medical liability system is a key part of addressing the cost of medical care. Finally, we will discuss methods of providing medical care for the poor by changing our system of insurance.
