Why Do Most Parents Want Children 'Of Their Own'?

Most parents want to be able to procreate children ‘of their own’ though some do decide to adopt. But what does this ‘of their own’ mean exactly? Does it imply that they want to pass on their DNA or that they want to be responsible for the actual brining of a life into existence, or is there something else? This part of the discussion will also address issues related to kinship bonds and why they are important.

This presentation was a session at the Center's 2012 Academy of Fellows Consultation on "The Ethics and Theology of Synthetic Gametes" held on November 3, 2012. For more information on the consultation visit here.
