Lisa Anderson-Shaw is the Director of the Clinical Ethics Consult Service at the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC) in Chicago, where she helped to design and implement the current hospital-based consult service. Dr. Anderson-Shaw conducts most of the Clinical Ethics Consult Service’s case consultations, and helped develop the consult service’s secured web-board for case consultation review by her peers. She has been a member of the UIMC Ethics Committee since 1989 and currently serves as the committee co-chair.

She is also a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Research Institutional Review Board # 1, and facilitates the UIMC-sponsored “Illinois Health Care Ethics Committee” virtual discussion board as a resource for institutional ethics committee members throughout the state of Illinois.

Dr. Anderson-Shaw has been at UIMC since 1988. She worked as a clinical nurse specialist in head and neck surgery prior to joining the Clinical Ethics Consult service. She is a licensed and board-certified Advance Practice Nurse in the state of Illinois, with over 30 years of nursing experience, most of which has been in the critical care areas. Dr. Anderson-Shaw is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UIC School of Nursing and UIC School of Medicine. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Loyola University, Chicago, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate clinical ethics and health policy courses. In addition, she is a member of the Ethics Committee and provides clinical ethics consultation service to MacNeal Health Systems in Berwyn and to RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale and Chicago.

She is currently on the Executive Leadership Task Force for POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), and has worked with stakeholders all over Illinois to establish the POLST program for the Illinois Department of Public Health. She is a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities Clinical Ethics Consultation Affairs.

Dr. Anderson-Shaw has been published extensively, with her work appearing in publications including the Journal of Medical Ethics, the Journal of Clinical Ethics, Chest, The American Journal of Bioethics, Journal of Nursing Administration’s Healthcare Law, Ethics & Regulation, and Bone Marrow Transplantation and the Journal of NeuroOncology. She is on the editorial board for CHART – Journal of Nursing in Illinois and reviews for Critical Care Medicine, Transplant, American Journal of Bioethics, The American Journal of Transplantation, Journal of the Rural Healthcare Association, and the Journal of Pediatrics. She is a frequent speaker at national and international bioethics meetings. She is currently doing research related to the identification of ethical issues in routine ambulatory care settings, the concept of self-identity in patients with brain tumors, and issues in rural healthcare ethics. She has an interest in the role that religion and spirituality has on health and healthcare, especially with respect to beginning of life and end of life ethical issues.

Dr. Anderson-Shaw completed a one year post-doctorate fellowship followed by a two-year senior fellowship at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. She received her BSN at Southern Illinois University, MSN from Indiana University, MA from Loyola University, Chicago and DrPH from the University of Illinois.

She is a member of the American Nurses Association and The American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, and sits on the Lincoln Christian University Chicago-area Presidents Advisory Board.
