Preconference Institutes and Postconference Seminars explore contemporary bioethical issues more in-depth and can be taken with or without academic credit and/or continuing education credit. Academic credit hours are offered through Trinity International University and can be credited toward degree programs at Trinity or transferred to other institutions. Preconference institutes will be offered online.

 Intensive Bioethics Institute (BE5100)

This course provides a graduate level survey of the field of bioethics, introducing competing ways of addressing bioethical issues in historical, philosophical, and theological perspectives. Topics include history of bioethics, competing ethical approaches, beginning-of-life issues, assisted reproduction, end-of-life care, stem cell research, cloning, and other bioethical challenges. All academic credit students must attend the online conference, June 26, conference fee waived.

 Advanced Bioethics Institute (BE6500)

This course considers various approaches to bioethics in greater depth, as well as coverage of key cutting-edge bioethical topics. Past topics have included biopolitics, feminist ethics, virtue ethics and moral theology, human enhancement, global bioethics, genetics, and the ethics of emerging technologies. All academic credit students must attend the online conference, June 26, conference fee waived.

 Contemporary Issues in Bioethics (BE7700a)

This is a guided research course designed to explore emerging issues in contemporary bioethics through topical workshops led by an interdisciplinary team of speakers addressing areas of respective expertise. Special emphasis in the workshops will be given to the professional dimensions of the issues under consideration, as well as an examination of the evolving academic literature.

 Global Medicine & Disaster Ethics Seminar (BE7700b)

This seminar explores ethical, philosophical, and theological issues that arise when medical interventions are required due to natural or man-made disasters that affect the well-being of a population. Discussions will include cultural and ethical relativism, how short- and long-term missions impact local medical professionals, and personal ethical decision-making.

Academic Credit Students
Academic credit hours are offered through Trinity International University (TIU) and can be credited toward degree programs at Trinity or transferred to other institutions. Those taking a Pre-Conference Institute or National Bioethics Conference Course for academic credit are required to attend the conference and are automatically registered for the conference when they register for the course through TIU. If you are not currently a Trinity student and are interested in academic credit, please contact Trinity Graduate Admissions at 847.317.8000. The conference fee is waived for those students. Academic credit cannot be requested after the event.

Non-Credit Students
Courses are open to anyone who has an interest in bioethics, but may not necessarily be pursuing a degree. Those interested in the non-credit option for the courses can register via the conference website by clicking the register button. Those wishing to attend the conference must register for the conference as well.

Continuing Education Students
A certificate of completion can be granted for any of the summer courses offered by CBHD. Several of the courses and conference offer continuing education credits for medical professionals. More information will be available once all continuing education credits have been approved.
