William P. Cheshire, Jr. (website)Consultant on NeuroethicsDr. Cheshire is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. His expertise encompasses disorders of the autonomic nervous system, trigeminal neuralgia, and neuroethics. He is Consultant in Neuroethics for The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity. Following an A.B. cum laude in biochemistry from Princeton University, he received his M.D. from West Virginia University and his M.A. in bioethics summa cum laude from Trinity International University. He completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in pain management at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and is board certified in Neurology. He is past Chair of the Autonomic Nervous System Section of the American Academy of Neurology and a member of the American Neurological Association. At Mayo he received the School of Continuing Medical Education Outstanding Faculty Member award in 2001. He is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, and an Adjunct Professor of Bioethics at Trinity International University. He has been a Visiting Professor of Bioethics at Covenant Theological Seminary and the A. Kurt Weiss lecturer in biomedical ethics at the University of Oklahoma. Author of more than one hundred publications in neuroscience and bioethics, he has recently addressed such questions as the neurobiological basis of moral reasoning and the ethical implications of technologies to enhance cognitive capacity. Dr. Cheshire contributes a regular feature to the international journal Ethics & Medicine entitled Grey Matters. |
